The Jolt! 11.26.2013

Happy Thanksgivukkah! (So very glad that won’t be coming around again any time soon!)

I moved up the publication date since many of you will be traveling tomorrow and may want something to keep you entertained while you wait. And, in honor of the huge amount we are going to consume, I am slimming down the content – welcome to the first all-video edition!

Plug in your headset and enjoy.

David Ogilvy’s Secret Weapon

Do you know what Ogilvy considered to be the most essential training for anyone in the ad game?

Here’s an old film interview with the master himself, very charming, with the surprising answer.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I envy you. For forty years, I’ve been a voice crying in the wilderness. Today, my first love is coming to its own. You face a golden future.
~ David Ogilvy

Bob Dylan and Karaoke

Need an example of a really bad idea gone wrong? Or a really great idea made good?

Love it or hate it – and you can find plenty of each, here’s one for you courtesy of Sony Music to promote the massive The Complete Album Collection Volume 1.

Viewers can watch the original footage or flip through 16 television channels as a variety of television personalities lip-sync the lyrics.

The overall effect is head-spinning but incredibly compelling: the more you surf through the “Like a Rolling Stone” video, the more the song’s contempt seems to be addressed to all of western civilization. By the time you land on a vintage live performance of the actual Bob Dylan, he feels like the only real person in existence.

Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow

Heard any good ones lately?

Based on the classic folk song, The Parting Glass, here is story telling at its simple best in a beautifully shot piece for Tullamore Dew.

It’s a  toast to one of their mates, who we presume has transitioned to a world beyond — which, he has, but not in the way we’re expecting.

Home For A Different Kind Of Holiday

Who needs a turkey?

From the ad connoisseurs at Beloved Brands comes this find from Google. Reunion is a beautiful story of two old friends. Going viral fast with almost 7,000,000 You Tube views this morning.

Here is a new Google ad where there is no English at all and yet the story is easy to follow.  If you want, you can turn on the Closed Captioning by hitting the tiny CC button at the bottom right of the video.  I watched it without understanding one word that was spoken and I was able to follow along.  And i cried.

Why A Hashtag Is Your Dog’s Best Friend

Love dogs? Wanna see a cool dog spot?

Here it is the new #woofwagen campaign for VW UK. A clever blend of TV and social that works well at both a national and local level.

Volkswagen UK has also brought this campaign to a dedicated landing page on their website, where dogs of different breeds are pictured alongside the car names and prices.

How To Wreck A Twerk

Ever wonder about the Law Of Unintended Consequences?

A subscribers special that is not available on ck Curates. Here for your amazement and entertainment is an absolute bit of silliness. I am not going to even try to rewrite the headline.

The Greatest Chatroulette Troll Ever Is Back Like a Wrecking Ball

Encore Presentations

Here are two recent posts from The Jolt! which in my opinion are just too good to miss.

Click Baby

from Adobe – short and very funny. I love this but it has absolutely no traction on You Tube. Goes to show that most folks still aren’t passionate about metrics.

The Bear and The Hare

From John Lewis, the UK retailer – now pushing 9,000,000 views on You Tube!
